Carnival Cruise Line recently signed a contract with the shipyards Meyer-Werft of Germany and Meyer-Turku of Finland for the construction of two new cruise ships which will make them the largest in Carnival's fleet.
These two new ships will be built in Finland, scheduled for delivery in 2020 and 2022. The passenger capacity for the new pair will be 5200 passengers each. This is larger than the 3936 passenger Carnival Vista, which debuted this year. They are the first in North America to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the cleanest-burning fossil fuel available. The use of LNG will reduce exhaust emissions both in port and at sea.
Carnival also released a statement saying that P&O will also receive a new 5200 passenger ship that will be the largest built for the UK market. The new P&O LNG powered ship is to be ready in 2020. Its construction will take place in Germany.
Carnival Corporation placed an order with the same shipbuilder last year for four additional LNG-powered vessels. Two of them will be for the German cruise line AIDA. The remaining two will be for Italian cruise line Costa. All four are scheduled for delivery sometime in 2019.
Carnival Horizon is another new ship being built. It is scheduled to arrive in 2018
